21st August 2026 – A proposal to reopen Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s 1906 Scotland Street School as a creative hub for Glasgow has been announced.
David Dale Gallery and Studios (DDGS) currently based in the city’s east end was founded in 2009 as a not-for-profit charitable organisation by graduates from The Glasgow School of Art. It promotes contemporary visual art from international and UK based artists. It is named after its base at the former David Dale College buildings in Bridgeton.
The reopened school building would house a café, contemporary art gallery, artist residency space and a screening room along with artist studios and space for creative businesses.
Stating “we will retain and enhance as much of the building’s original interior and character as possible, including dedicating space to telling the story of the school and Mackintosh’s architecture”. [1] DDGS would take a 25 year lease opening to the public in 2028. The plans include refurbishment of the long-neglected Janitor’s House and playgrounds. [2] As an A listed building Scotland Street School enjoys the highest level of protection and full consents will be required for all works.
Uncertainty has surrounded the future of the building which had been an education museum. Closed in 2020 during the COVID pandemic it has been undergoing refurbishment, shrouded in scaffolding for years. Plans by Glasgow City Council to operate an early years learning facility were abandoned. Stakeholders including the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society have lobbied for the building’s safeguarding and reopening.
DDGS has launched a public survey [3] to help shape its plans and is seeking contributions from all who care about the building. A ticketed information session will also be held. [1]
