About the work
Both Eric Ravilious and his friend Edward Bawden developed ‘textured watercolour’ techniques in the 1920s and 30s. Ravilious’ muted colour palette and cross hatching technique originated from his earlier mastery of wood engraving and give his works a beautiful coherence. The artist’s skill in reducing a scene to its essentials and immersing the viewer give the works a lasting power. Ravilious enjoyed painting open downland both in his native East Sussex but also further afield as here. Wiltshire Landscape was made in the first week of April 1937. The central road and rhythmic procession of telegraph poles create a strong sense of perspective which is magnified by the furrowed fields. An otherwise static and somewhat chilly scene is given liveliness and humanity by the inclusion of the black and white signpost and red GPO van. It is thought that the artist used photographic references to insert these elements in the composition and they animate it in a charming way. Both in its origins and its subject Wiltshire Landscape is a quintessentially British work. It gives interest, great enjoyment and further would make a beautiful gift also.
