Waves of Petals

Price range: £15.00 through £30.00

A museum-quality fine art giclée print of this stunning work by Japanese artist Shiro Kasamatsu.

“Waves of Petals” by Shiro Kasamatsu was made around 1956.

About the work
The richness of this stunning work lies in its many layers. Deceptively simple it embodies the history of Japanese printmaking in its graphic symbolism.

A group of three koi are glimpsed beneath the rippled surface of a pond covered with fallen Sakura (cherry) blossom. It is springtime. Sakura embodies the transience and nobility of human life and also the shinto ideals of impermanence, hope and renewal. Koi are revered as symbols of strength, perseverance, and transformation and also represent prosperity, good fortune, and personal growth. Their colours carry specific meanings; red for success, blue for serenity, gold for wealth. The presence of a rare Midorigoi green koi adds a further natural harmony. Waves of Petals is a deeply spiritual and meaningful work representing a rich tapestry of life’s adventures. Soothing and reflective, it will be enjoyed for years to come.

About the artist.
Shiro Kasamatsu began creating woodblock prints around 1919 and during his long life made around only 150 such works with 50 or so of the early woodblocks being lost to fire following the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. After the end of the Second World War Japanese printmaking underwent a renaissance and contributed to economic reconstruction. Shiro Kasamatsu made many works around this time with Waves of Petals being amongst the best.

Adapted from a Shōwa period woodblock by Shiro Kasamatsu.
