“The Poppies”

This beautiful Duille fine art print features “Vallmor / Les coquelicots” ( ‘The Poppies’ ) by Carl Larsson, painted in 1884.

Larsson was born in Stockholm in 1853 and is one of the most famous Swedish artists of the twentieth century. After a troubled early life he trained at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts and supported his parents from a young age working as a caricaturist and illustrator. He moved to Paris in 1877 where he settled and raised a large family.

About the work
Vallmor / Les coquelicots was commissioned by actor and art collector Benoît-Constant Coquelin from Larsson at the Paris Salon of 1884. Though the artist had remained independent of the Impressionist movement this work shows a strong influence of their style. Claude Monet’s Poppy Field was first shown a decade previously.

A young child ( possibly Jean, only son of the actor ) walks through a sunlit meadow of long grass and poppies. The soft light, fuzzy richness of a summer landscape and the wistful subject make a beautiful scene of great appeal.
