About the work
Two cats is characteristic of Kiyoshi Saitō’s late career style. Self-taught as a printmaker Saitō was strongly influenced by the work of Edvard Munch and Piet Mondrian. He developed a flatter two-dimensional quality in his work with graphic designs that are richly coloured and textured. Scholars have described these later works as blending traditional Japanese techniques with influences from the west. Two cats is beautifully observed and captures a playful scene. It’s a stylish composition emphasising both the shapes of the cats but also the spaces between them and their connection to one another. A joyful work that resonating with the traditional printmaking of Japan but with a firmly modern feel. It will look at home in any interior.
