About the work
Emile Claus was Belgium’s foremost Impressionist painter. His personal style evolved from his early naturalistic paintings through influence by the French Impressionists. Claus became a leader in the Belgian Luminist Movement which made the depiction of light the basis of their art. During the First World War he lived in London where he occupied a house overlooking the River Thames. A series of works – ‘reflection on the Thames’ – exploring the effects of light on water connected him with his great inspiration Claude Monet.

Claus was later to be known as ‘The Sun Painter’ and ‘The Prince of Luminism’. The Solar Effect on the Thames captures the fleeting atmosphere at sunset by Waterloo Bridge where light dances on the water. Rich strokes of multifarious colours, the movement of traffic and people on the bridge and riverbank all add animation and the sense of a fleeting moment caught in time. Here the influence of both photography and European Impressionism are at their peak. This is a work which will captivate you always.
