About the work
Auguste Lepère was born and worked in Paris. By 1889 when “The Palais de Justice” was made Lepère had become one of the most renowned printmakers of his generation. His contemporary Henri Rivière and he both took leading roles in reviving traditional woodcut prints in France in the later nineteenth century. Lepère’s later work like that of Rivière shows the influence of Japonisme. This influence from the east was taken up by Vincent van Gogh, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Gustav Klimt and Claude Monet among many. Elements of traditional Japanese woodblock design can be seen clearly in Lepère’s composition and the way in which the prints have been finished. For lovers of Paris, this beautiful scene is a wistful reminder of its magic.
