This stunning Duille fine art print is of “The Fort” which was made in pencil and watercolour by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in around 1926 at Port-Vendres, France. Available framed or unframed.
This stunning watercolour landscape, one of Mackintosh’s final works, is amongst his very best. This is a museum-quality archival print made using materials which will last for many years.
About the work
Mackintosh lived with his wife Margaret in Port-Vendres from 1923 after having given up architecture and design. Here he began to paint a series of watercolours including flower studies and port scenes. However the larger landscapes are perhaps the most significant of his works from this period.
Meticulously executed these paintings show a precision which is modern and striking. The Fort depicts Fort Mailly which overlooks Port-Vendres from the east. Mackintosh carefully constructed the view, moving the lighthouse from its actual location across the harbour so as to balance the composition. The integration of both man made and natural structures gives the painting a firmly architectural quality. The blocky forms of buildings and landscape contrast with the sinuous rendering of coastline and the road which leads the eye into the distance. This is a very appealing and graphic scene drenched in glowing mediterranean light.
The Mackintoshes returned to London in 1927 so that Charles could receive treatment for an illness to which sadly in December 1928 he finally succumbed. His ashes were scattered in Port Vendres in keeping with his final wishes.
Companion works “The Little Bay” and “La Rue du Soleil” are further poignant and beautiful reminders of Mackintosh’s genius.
