“The Flowering Orchard”. Vincent van Gogh. 1888.
This beautiful Duille fine art print features ‘The Flowering Orchard’ by renowned Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh.
The Flowering Orchard was made in 1888 whilst van Gogh was living in the south of France at Arles.
The painting is one of fourteen works devoted to this subject.
About the work
The Flowering Orchard was influenced by van Gogh’s interest in Japanese prints; this is seen in the flattening of the image, removal of shadows and the elongation and angularity of the tree branches. The arrival of spring inspired Vincent to a “fury of work”. Writing to his brother Theo he said “the trees are in blossom and I would like to do a Provençal orchard of tremendous gaiety.” Vincent would paint works such as these ‘en plein air’ capturing the energy and beauty of the scene with passion and immediacy.
