About the work
In 1835, Currier started his own lithographic business in Roxbury, Massachusetts. The firm ( known as Currier & Ives from 1857 ) went on to produce over a million prints. Currier & Ives developed a keen sense of popular taste and this along with clever marketing brought them great success. The Favorite Cat was originally produced as a hand coloured lithograph and is today represented in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
