“The Botanists”

The Botanists was made by Joseph Edward Southall in 1928. This is a museum-quality archival print made using materials which will last for many years and is available ready framed for instant display.

About the work
The Botanists is an idyllic summer scene from Cornwall’s Fowey estuary. Two women dressed in stylish 1920s clothing are painted against a backdrop of sailboats on the water. Many Southall works of this period feature sailing vessels. Painting trips to Venice and other Italian destinations inspired his depiction of shimmering water populated by boats. Artists of the Italian Renaissance provided a visual vocabulary. In 1930 Southall reprised the very same location for The Botanists in a related work The Return.

The Botanists was painted in Southall’s favourite medium of egg tempera and he prized its jewel – like qualities in the rendering of colour. The work was painted on silk further contributing to its inner luminosity; the picture physically glows with colour.

Joseph Edward Southall was an artist deeply rooted in the English Arts & Crafts movement and a creative titan in his native Birmingham where he worked in architecture, as a muralist, carver, engraver, illustrator and jewellery designer. He exhibited frequently and widely including The Royal Academy and at The Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1910. The Botanists embodies this wealth of heritage and experience; it has a timeless appeal and will give years of pleasure.
