About the work

Conrado Walter Massaguer was a celebrated illustrator, caricaturist, and publisher who founded Social Magazine in 1916. Social became an influential publication that shaped the artistic, intellectual and fashion tastes of Cuba’s elite into the 1920s.

Swimmer adorned the August 1919 cover of Social and features a strong Deco era “Flapper” design antcipating the coming 20s Jazz Age. Gorgeous summer colours, flowing geometric waves and the elegant lines of the central swimmer depict a modern, liberated adventurous woman diving into the water.

This inter-war period was a time of great social change. Women achieved ever greater independence and this was reflected in new styles of dress and athletic activities traditionally the preserve of men. The woman wears a contemporary sleeveless swimwsuit, a decorative patterned swim cap, and lace-up water shoes.

Swimmer was both influential and symbolic of a new era of female emancipation. It embodies in a most stylish way new confidence and hope in the future.
