“Sturrall, Donegal”. Rockwell Kent. 1926.
Rockwell Kent, born in New York State 1882, was a multi-talented adventurer. He travelled widely and worked across numerous disciplines including painting, illustration, printing and writing. His personal philosophy lead him to places with spiritual and mystical significance. “I want the elemental, infinite thing; I want to paint the rhythm of eternity”, he is quoted as saying in 1919. Sturrall is one of around 36 paintings made whilst Kent stayed in Donegal during the summer of 1926. This is a museum-quality archival print made using materials which will last for many years.
About the work
Sturrall is a view of the The Sturrall Headland ( ‘An Stural’ ) and its associated rocks pushing out into the Atlantic off the coast of Donegal. A remote, somewhat inaccessible place fully exposed to the wild natural beauty beloved of the artist, Kent lived and worked in a converted cowshed. He made numerous paintings of the coastal views and also of farm work in the surrounding land. Sturrall is a gloriously rich appreciation, suffused with golden light and glowing colour taking us up into a scene of overwhelming natural beauty. It is indeed ‘the infinite thing’ to be moved by and enjoyed always.
Made to last
This is a hand-finished, museum-quality archival print made using materials which will last for many years. It is printed in archival quality pigment inks on Somerset Velvet 255gsm acid free paper reproducing the original work. This heavyweight mould-made paper won’t yellow or degrade like inferior products. Our prints will stay true, bright and beautiful for years.
