“Sea Pink” Mackintosh Print

This striking Duille fine art print features the delicate pencil and watercolour drawing of Sea Pink ( Armeria maritima ) from 1901 by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The work was made on Holy Island. Here the work is reproduced at actual size in high resolution. This is a museum-quality archival print made using materials which will last for many years.

About the work
Sea Pink was made when Mackintosh was visiting Holy Island ( Lindisfarne ) in Northumberland on the north east coast of England. The drawing’s cartouche features the initials ‘M’ and ‘T’ which stand for ‘Margaret’ and ‘Tosh’ or ‘Toshie’, his nickname.

The work is full of carefully observed detail. Sea Pink is the only drawing in which Mackintosh has labelled the different stages of a plant’s growth: bud, flower and seed. Armeria maritima is common around the coasts of Britain. Its beauty belies its resilience as an enduring plant successfully growing on challenging clifftops and rocky terrain. Mackintosh has drawn the plant’s densely tufted cushion base in a highly stylised oval, a device seen in many of his other designs.

The original drawing featured in Glasgow’s 150th anniversary exhibition, “Charles Rennie Mackintosh Making the Glasgow Style”. The show later travelled to Liverpool and to The United States at Baltimore, Nashville, Albuquerque and Saint Petersburg, Florida.

Sea Pink has been reproduced in stunning detail directly from this original drawing. By kind permission from the collection of The University of Glasgow we can bring you this beautiful work to enjoy at home every day.
