This stunning watercolour from Mackintosh was made in Chelsea, London in the early 1920s. This is a museum-quality archival print made using materials which will last for many years.
About the work
Pinks was painted around 1923 and this post-war period proved to be financially difficult for the artist and his wife Margaret. The couple turned to producing textile designs which they sold to progressive manufacturers to raise funds.
Mackintosh also painted several floral themed works for sale ( Winter Rose, Peonies, Yellow Tulips and Petunias were others ). Unlike other works in this series Mackintosh has not used patterns from his textile designs in the background of Pinks. Instead the scene is meticulously rendered with studied precision. There is a beautiful contrast between the architectural jardinière and the vivacious display of flowers bursting from it.
Pinks is a joyful, uplifting work, arguably the best in this ‘Chelsea’ series. The richness and beauty of this painting will bring pleasure for many years and create a striking feature in any room.
