Our beautiful Duille fine art print of “Pimpernel” made in pencil and watercolour by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1901 on Holy Island, Northumberland. We ship worldwide. Available framed or unframed.
This striking Duille fine art print features a delicate pencil and watercolour drawing of Pimpernel ( Lysimachia arvensis or Anagallis arvensis ) from 1901 by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The work was made on Holy Island. Here the work is reproduced at actual size in high resolution. This is a museum-quality archival print made using materials which will last for many years.
About the work
Pimpernel was made when Mackintosh was visiting Holy Island ( Lindisfarne ) in Northumberland on the north east coast of England. The drawing’s cartouche features the initials ‘M’ and ‘T’ which stand for ‘Margaret’ and ‘Tosh’ or ‘Toshie’, his nickname.
The work is full of carefully observed detail. Pimpernel – also known as The Scarlet Pimpernel is a low-growing, trailing annual plant that grows wild in many parts of the world. In Britain it can be found as an invasive plant in gardens and arable land. It also grows on coastal cliffs which was likely the location of Mackintosh’s subject on Holy Island ( Lindisfarne ).
The plant has vivid small flowers with five petals that are red with purple centres. The flowers open during the day closing at night and at times of low atmospheric pressure. Pimpernels come in other colours too but the variety shown here is most widely known and has been made famous as the emblem of the hero of Baroness Orczy’s 1905 novel ‘The Scarlet Pimpernel’.
Mackintosh’s delightful drawing show several flowers at varying stages of development from bud to seed head. The flower of a second unidentified plant is shown bottom right above the cartouche and has perhaps been included for compositional balance. The use of colour is beautifully considered and gives life to the delicate representation of the plant. An enjoyable and enduring reminder of that glorious summer celebrated by Charles and Margaret Mackintosh in 1901.
