About the work
Auguste Lepère was born and worked in Paris. By 1890 when “Parliament at 9 o’Clock in the Evening” was made Lepère had become one of the most renowned printmakers of his generation. His contemporary Henri Rivière and he both took leading roles in reviving traditional woodcut prints in France in the later nineteenth century. Lepère’s later work like that of Rivière shows the influence of Japonisme. This influence from the east was taken up by Vincent van Gogh, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Gustav Klimt and Claude Monet among many. This striking wood engraving by Lepère captures the busy scene from Parliament Square with The Palace of Westminster in session under a moody evening sky. Showing the famous view of ‘Big Ben’ and looking towards Westminster Bridge. Horse drawn cabs, and busy passers-by animate the foreground. Central to the composition is the shadowy entrance to ancient Westminster Hall which has played a key role in British historical moments over the past one thousand years. For lovers of London this is a fabulously evocative print.
