“Orange glass jug with green cutting”. Marie Krøyer. 1884.
A beautiful study by Danish artist Marie Krøyer. This is a museum-quality archival print made using materials which will last for many years.
About the work
Orange glass jug with green cutting was made in 1884 when the artist then known as Marie Triepcke was in the early stages of her career and receiving tuition from established figures such as Carl Thomsen and Bertha Wegmann. It is one of only about twenty surviving paintings from her career. An intensely observed study, Krøyer captures the simplicity of a domestic scene which is beautifully animated by the effects of light on the richly coloured glass and contrasting foliage. In its framing of the scene, redolent of a photographic snapshot, and in its everyday subject matter it is a thoroughly modern work. Marie Krøyer’s career was impacted time and again by tumultuous personal relationships. Her persistence and resilience saw her develop both as an artist and later as an interior designer influenced by the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. In recent years Marie Kroyer has been ‘rediscovered’ and appreciated anew. Orange glass jug with green cutting is a wonderful reminder of her talent which can be enjoyed every day. This beautiful print will look great in any setting and would make a perfect gift also.
