“New Year Snow”

“New Year Snow”. Eric Ravilious. 1938.

This beautiful Duille fine art print of New Year Snow is by celebrated English artist Eric Ravilious.

About the work

In early 1938 Ravilious stayed for two months at Capel-y-Ffin near the English-Welsh border within The Black Mountains. Here he made New Year Snow in his characteristic style. Dry watercolour brushstrokes, reducing and rearranging a scene to intensify its effect, muted greens and russet browns.

Eric Ravilious developed a ‘textured watercolour’ technique in his early career. His muted colour palette and cross hatching technique originated from his earlier mastery of wood engraving and give his works a beautiful coherence.

Ravilious’ rendering of the valley view creates a sense of enclosure in the spare winter landscape. A single man-made object, the sheep feeder, grounds and draws us in. Open airy skies and the snow dusted landscape create a lightness of atmosphere and dreamy quality. Artfully observed details; tussocks of grass emerging from snow and slate grey shards of light from the water bring a sense of moving through a wild untamed landscape on a winter walk. It is refreshing and delightful.

New Year Snow is a beautiful engaging work which will bring years of pleasure.
