About the artist
Cecil Chichester was born in New York City in 1891. As a young man he studied with leading artists and later became a key figure in the Woodstock Art Colony. His work spanned commercial illustration and fine art and his landscapes of the Woodstock period are his most celebrated being represented in major collections including those of both The Smithsonian and The White House. 

About the work
The Mid-Hudson Bridge is a landmark structure spanning the Hudson River between Poughkeepsie and Highland in Downstate New York. Opened in 1930 the bridge was a pioneering development and one of the longest suspension bridges in the world at its inception. It remains a strategic link across the river and is a striking visual presence in the beautiful landscape of the Hudson River Valley region.

In 1934 the bridge was considered a technological marvel. Chichester emphasises the iron grey bridge pushing out into the winter skyscape conquering the icy river. In the foreground a scene of domestic scale and human activity grounds us in present realities. The truck bravely attempting its snowy hill climb, winter walkers and the small houses clustering the bridge approach contrast in scale and colour with the futuristic backdrop. As a symbol of human progress and resonating to our present day this is a thoroughly engaging work to enjoy always.
