About the work
In Mephisto we see the full expressive power of Harry Clarke’s talent. 1914 saw him working on numerous illustrations including a book of Hans Andersen’s Fairy Tales but he also completed numerous individual pieces such as this one. Mephisto is an exquisite manifestation of the demonic Faustian Mephistopheles. Enticing us with his mesmerising stare and cloaked amorphously in watery veridian his spidery fingers proffer a champagne coupe of absinthe ( or is it poison ? ). What fiendish plot is in play? The character of Mephisto as drawn by Clarke bears more than a passing resemblance to its maker. He was tall, striking, dark – haired and charming. For the young artist this self-parody will have been fun to share. It remains engaging, with a twist of darkness and in its masterfully drawn minimalism a striking work to be enjoyed or given, as with Clarke himself, as a gift. A work to captivate you always.
