About the work
A delightful street scene from 1935 in which Lowry has depicted a gathering of children dancing around a maypole whilst their parents look on. The exact location of the scene is uncertain but is typical of works from this period where terraced Salford streets and industrial buildings form the framework of busy working class lives. The painting is packed with closely observed detail both in the buildings but also in its cast of characters. From the foreground into the distance we can see multiple social goings-on. Two skinny black dogs trot carelessly across the scene, everywhere there’s motion and life.

It would be hard to guess from this joyous work that this was a time of great personal stress for the artist who worked for several years to repay debts inherited from his father. It might be thought that Lowry, still in the early stages of his career was somewhat driven and his prolific output of work in these years pays testament to it. May Day is a beautifully composed work always revealing something new and to be enjoyed for years to come.
