A museum-quality fine art giclée print of this stylish Art Nouveau design by Eugène Grasset.

“Mars”. Eugène Grasset. 1894.

This gorgeous Duille fine art print features Mars ( March ) a woodblock/chromatograph by Swiss artist Eugène Grasset. Born in Lausanne in 1845 Grasset trained in both art and architecture and was skilled in many disciplines including furniture, wallpaper, textile, ceramic and jewellery design. From 1871 he lived and worked in Paris. Like many European artists in the late 19th Century he was influenced by traditional Japanese art. In his later career Grasset worked for several American companies and influenced among others Louis Comfort Tiffany. Grasset is considered to be an early pioneer of Art Nouveau and this work is an accomplished expression of the style.

About the work
Mars is one of a series of seasonally-themed works, one for each month of the year. It was first published in an edition showing only the names of each month ( as in our print ). Later the designs were adopted by the Parisan store Maison de La Belle Jardinière and were used as a calendar to be given to customers advertising elegant fashions of the day.

In Mars a beautifully dressed young woman prepares for the sowing of seeds in her springtime garden. Leaves are beginning to show and early blooming violet-coloured flowers contrast wonderfully with the russet of the model’s dress. The scene is rich with pattern, texture and perspective all bathed in golden spring light.

Mars is full of springtime promise, richness, elegance and charm. It will be enjoyed always.
