Art Lover rose card

In 1901 Charles and Margaret Mackintosh produced a portfolio of drawings for a competition to design ‘An Art Lover’s House’.

98 years later an interpretation of the design was built in Glasgow following a nine year programme by leading engineers and architects. ‘The House for An Art Lover’ has since become a key visitor attraction in the city and a spectacular venue for special celebrations. Features within the house include furniture, wall decorations and stained glass based on the original Mackintosh portfolio and realised by skilled craftspeople of the day including Bruce Hamilton, Rab Macinnes, Linda Canon and Elisabeth Viguie Culshaw.

Our card features an adaption of a rose detail taken from a stained glass panel inspired by the Mackintosh design.

Other cards in our Mackintosh Memories collection feature further beautiful details found in the House’s Music Room – the enigmatic portrait and roundel motifs.

Rose Tree card

A gorgeous, understated card featuring two beautiful designs from Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

In 1906 Mackintosh produced drawings for Scotland Street School in south Glasgow. One included stylishly drawn trees in the landscape surrounding the building.

The project was heavily influenced by the work of European designers such as Josef Hoffmann, Gustav Klimt and the other Secessionists who along with Mackintosh lead a revolution in design in the early twentieth century.

The school still stands and can be visited to this day though sadly Mackintosh’s trees were never actually planted.

Decorating the tree are stylised roses adapted from the ‘Teardrop & Rose’ textile design made by Mackintosh around 1920 whilst living in London’s Chelsea district.

Florentine Terrace card

Rich with symbolism of Mackintosh’s life and career.

This stunning card features his own Glasgow home 6 Florentine Terrace.

The house is shown softly illuminated at Christmas time with a stylishly decorated tree and a magical night sky.
On the reverse is a portrait of Mackintosh.

Featuring several Mackintosh designs:
The front door with its square motif glazing.
The tree which appeared in the design for Scotland Street School.
The roses which were made as a textile design.
The planter used at Northampton – Mackintosh’s final major architectural work.
Hand drawn lettering made in 1922.

Margaret and Charles Mackintosh remodelled and furnished their home between 1906 and 1914. They later moved to England and then France.

The Glasgow house ( sold in 1920 ) was carefully deconstructed in 1963 and its interiors eventually reinstalled within a new building to make ‘The Mackintosh House’. It stands a few streets away and can be visited to this day.

Mackintosh deco landscape card

The drama, mystery and rich colour of the Lounge Hall of Mackintosh’s 1916 design for Derngate in Northampton have inspired a deco winter landscape and shimmering, bejewelled night sky.

The stylised geometric trees and jewel colours remind us of one of Britain’s very first art deco interiors.

Derngate’s owner further commissioned Mackintosh to make a greetings card in 1922 from which the designer’s hand lettered inscription has been included here.
