This strikingly stylish watercolour from Mackintosh was produced in Chelsea, London around 1920. Featuring a lively and beautifully composed bouquet which is drawn in a graphic, almost pattern – like way. This is a museum-quality archival print made using materials which will last for many years.
About the work
Garden Bouquet was painted after the First World War period which proved to be financially difficult for the artist and his wife Margaret. The couple had turned to producing textile designs which they sold to progressive manufacturers to raise funds. Mackintosh also painted several floral themed works for sale including Petunias ,Winter Rose and Peonies. Many of the textile designs from this period feature stylised floral motifs similar to those in Garden Bouquet and it seems an obvious leap by the artist to offer such works as paintings for sale in their own right.
This is a joyous composition, full of Jazz Age vivacity. It looks forward to the Art Deco era and once again reminds us of how innovative and adaptable Mackintosh remained throughout his career. A beautiful and stunning work for your collection.
