£10.00£37.00

This delightful Duille fine art print features “Petunias” made in pencil and watercolour by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1916 in Chelsea, London. Available framed or unframed.

This richly coloured and stylish watercolour from Mackintosh was produced in Chelsea, London during the First World War. It features a gorgeous cascade of Petunia flowers and also includes a textile design by the artist shown in the background. This is a museum-quality archival print made using materials which will last for many years.

About the work
Petunias was painted in 1916 and this mid-war period proved to be financially difficult for the artist and his wife Margaret. With wartime building restrictions limiting demand Mackintosh’s only major architectural commission that year was for 78 Derngate, Northampton. The couple turned to producing textile designs which they sold to progressive manufacturers to raise funds. Mackintosh also painted several floral themed works for sale including Petunias ( Winter Rose and Peonies were others ).

One of the textile designs Sweet Peas features as a backdrop in Petunias. As a subject the Petunia seemed to hold a particular appeal for Mackintosh, painted here and also previously in 1914 at Walberswick. The flower also influenced the design at 78 Derngate where he specified ‘Petunia’ as one of the interior colours. Eighty years after its creation Petunias was exhibited in Glasgow in 1996 in a major retrospective Mackintosh exhibition.
