This stunning Duille fine art print features “Peonies” made in pencil and watercolour by Charles Rennie Mackintosh around 1920 in Chelsea, London. Available framed or unframed.
This vivid and beautiful watercolour from Mackintosh was produced in Chelsea, London around the First World War period. This is a museum-quality archival print made using materials which will last for many years.
About the work
“Peonies” was painted around 1920 and this post-war period proved to be financially difficult for the artist and his wife Margaret. The couple turned to producing textile designs which they sold to progressive manufacturers to raise funds.
Mackintosh also painted several floral themed works for sale ( Winter Rose, Pinks, Yellow Tulips and Petunias were others ); though Peonies did not sell until after his death in 1927. Like several of the works in this series Mackintosh has used patterns from his textile designs in the background of his painting. The graphic wavy designs look firmly to the future, anticipating much later ‘Op Art’ motifs, whilst the realism of the flowers recall earlier works from his Walberswick period.
Peonies is a bold, beautifully composed work that displays Mackintosh’s great talent as a watercolourist to the full. The lush flowers are gorgeously detailed and the luminous colouring of the work will create a stunning focal point in any room.
