This stunning Duille fine art print is of “La Rue du Soleil” which was made in pencil and watercolour by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1926 at Port-Vendres, France. Available framed or unframed.
This stunning watercolour landscape, one of Mackintosh’s final works, is surely amongst his very best. This is a museum-quality archival print made using materials which will last for many years.
About the work
Mackintosh lived with his wife Margaret in Port-Vendres from 1923 after having given up architecture and design. Here he began to paint a series of watercolours including flower studies and port scenes. However the larger landscapes are perhaps the most significant and appealing of his works from this period.
Meticulously executed with striking compositions these paintings render their scenes with almost architectural precision. The absence of people and the celebration of man made and natural structures add to the effect. La Rue du Soleil is a view across the harbour of Porte – Vendres. The picture is unusual in that two thirds of the painting is devoted to the water. This is a masterful and graphic composition, almost abstract and packed with a myriad of delicate colour washes that evoke the shimmering mediterranean waters.
The Mackintoshes returned to London in 1927 so that Charles could receive treatment for an illness to which sadly in December 1928 he finally succumbed. His ashes were scattered in Port Vendres in keeping with his final wishes. A companion work “The Little Bay” is a further poignant and beautiful reminder of Mackintosh’s genius.
