About the work
This striking pencil and watercolour drawing by Charles Rennie Mackintosh was made in 1915 at Walberswick on the east coast of England where Mackintosh was living with his wife Margaret at that time. It is thought that this work, one of a series featuring wild flowers made around the same period, was intended for publication in a book. Great Mullein ( Verbascum thapsus ) is an unmistakable British plant with tall flower spikes bearing bright yellow five – lobed flowers. Mackintosh has drawn the top of two spikes, fully colouring the left and leaving the right largely in outline which aids in understanding the structure of the plant. There is an elegance to the composition with the stylised, twisted lower leaves being used as a framing device and the inscription panel neatly integrated featuring the artist’s favourite square motif. It is a statuesque subject tightly drawn and intensely observed.
