About the work
El Lissitzky alongside Kazimir Malevic was a pioneer in the post war and post revolutionary Russian avant garde. The Suprematist movement adopted geometric forms ( circles, squares and rectangles ) rendered in a restricted colour range to convey “the supremacy of pure artistic feeling” rather than the classical approach of the realistic depiction of objects. This deconstruction of visual language was believed to free the artist and allow for a purer form of expression. Let’s Fly to Earth from a Distance was made in 1920 against the background of the Russian civil war. El Lissitzky produced a series of works exploring the ideals of a new social order attempting to examine the very meaning of what it means to live in a society of equals. He stated, “The artist constructs a new symbol with his brush. This symbol is not a recognizable form of anything that is already finished, already made, or already existent in the world – it is a symbol of a new world, which is being built upon and which exists by the way of the people.” Let’s Fly to Earth from a Distance sets up a visual dynamic causing us to reflect on our existence from a fresh perspective. It transmits in a very immediate way the notion of looking at our world as an object and anticipates the powerful perspectives more fully realised when our vulnerable planet could finally be visualised from space. It remains both a richly enjoyable graphic image and a lasting provocation.
