This beautiful Duille fine art print features Japonica (Chaenomeles speciosa) drawn in pencil and watercolour by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1910 at Chiddingstone, Kent. It is one of his most vivid botanical works and numbers amongst a series of drawings made around the same time. This is a museum-quality archival print made using materials which will last for many years.
About the work
Mackintosh was visiting Kent with his wife Margaret in early 1910 and made a number of botanical drawings at Chiddingstone. Others include Crab – Apple and Blackthorn. Mackintosh made many drawings in this format and they were usually inscribed with his initials and also with the initials of those who were with him. In this case the cartouche reads “CRM and MMM” ( Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh ). Chaenomeles speciosa remains a popular garden plant producing richly coloured flowers in early spring. Known popularly as ‘Japanese Quince’ its fine structure and asian origins will have appealed to Mackintosh who was inspired throughout his career by Japanese design. He has drawn the plant in a stylised manner influenced by the aesthetics of Japanese prints. The rich red evokes the spirit of Japan and also makes for a lively and beautiful composition. Throughout his entire life the study and representation of flowers was to be a driving passion and a defining foundation of the artist’s visual language.
