“Irises”. Fukuda Heihachirō. 1934.
A stunning silk painting by Japanese artist Fukuda Heihachirō. This is a museum-quality archival print made using materials which will last for many years.
About the work
Fukuda Heihachirō worked primarily in the Japanese Nihonga movement which adapted traditional techniques to the modern era. Irises is an exquisitely detailed work showing the artist’s intense observation. A very modern geometric composition is framed snapshot-like to treat the scene almost as a surface pattern. The effect is intensified by the silk ground and the contrast between three dimensional perspective and the pattern-like surface draws us in. Irises is filled with movement and rich colour. It is a delightful work revealing fresh moments of enjoyment with every viewing.
