“Illuminations de la Tour Eiffel”

Illuminations de la Tour Eiffel ( Eiffel Tower illuminations ) was produced in 1900 in celebration of L’Exposition Universelle de 1900 ( The 1900 Paris Exposition ). The work is a  stunning after-dark view of the main Showgrounds centred on Trocadéro and the Eiffel Tower against the background of the night-time city.

The Eiffel tower, world icon of Paris is arrayed in light with beams radiating to all quarters of the city. The Seine dazzles with refelection as it flows through the scene. The Exposition buildings glow against the night sky and crowds of visitors can be seen animating the Pont d’Iéna as they cross the river to the show.

The legacy of L’Exposition Universelle survives in its Art Nouveau buildings within the modern city such as the Grand Palais and the Petit Palais and especially in the famous Métro station entrances by Hector Guimard. Less remembered but no less significant were the 1900 Summer Olympic Games which formed a part of the Exposition and were the first of the modern era organised under Presidency of the legendary Pierre de Coubertin.

124 years on Paris is again in the world spotlight. For lovers of sport, art and design this breathtaking scene is a fantastic reminder of its magic and rich ancestry.
