“Gilardia” Mackintosh Print

This beautiful Duille fine art print features Gaillardia flowers ( spelled by Mackintosh as ‘Gilardia’ ) drawn in pencil and watercolour by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1914 at Walberswick on England’s east coast. It is a vibrant celebratory work reproduced here at actual size in high resolution. This is a museum-quality archival print made using materials which will last for many years.

About the work
Mackintosh was living with his wife Margaret on the east coast of England from July 1914. Gilardia was painted at Walberswick in 1914, likely in the summer. Gaillardias are popular garden plants originating from the Americas. They are branching in habit and have vivid flowers with an almost graphic quality. To Mackintosh a subject such as this would be compelling. A group of flowers is shown with a single fully opened one centre stage and another behind it and a developing flower shown to the side. Gilardia is one of a series of related drawings featuring wild and cultivated flowers made around the same period which were intended for publication in a book. This is a beautiful uplifting work which will be enjoyed for many years to come.
