About the work
This beautiful poster of Joséphine Baker was designed by Jean Chassaing in 1931. Chassaing developed a portraiture style within the Deco movement based on graphic caricature and produced a number of posters of well known Jazz Age artistes during the late 1920s and early 1930s. It has been suggested that this poster is amongst his most prestigious works and it was released at the peak of Joséphine Baker’s fame in Paris during the run of her show “Paris qui Remue”.
The dynamic composition, use of diagonals, contrasting colours and the modern typography perfectly suited the subject – she was renowned for challenging convention with her daring performances and captivating persona. Joséphine Baker has become a celebrated icon of France and was given honorary symbolic interment in Paris at The Panthéon on 30th November 2021. Her legacy is as a singer, dancer, actress, civil rights activist, French Resistance agent and pioneering figure in whose footsteps many have since followed.
