About the work
Mackintosh was living with his wife Margaret in the early part of the Great War period on the east coast of England from July 1914. Fritillaria was painted at Walberswick in 1915, likely in the spring when the species is in flower. Fritillaria meleagris is found naturalised in many parts of Europe and western Asia. At the time of Mackintosh’s drawing the plant was growing widely in British ancient hay meadows. Today it is less common in the wild but is popular as a garden plant. Mackintosh has taken great care to draw the checkered pattern of the petals and has even decorated the drawing’s cartouche with it too. The stylish composition and fine line work has a rhythmic quality suggestive of the gentle swaying and nodding of the plant in the breeze. Fritillaria is one of a series of related drawings featuring wild flowers made around the same period which were intended for publication in a book.
