This beautiful Duille fine art print of Flower Meadow in the North is by celebrated Norwegian artist Harald Sohlberg.

About the work and the artist
Sohlberg is particularly known for his depictions of the mountains of Rondane and the town of Røros. He attended the Royal School of Art and Design of Christiania and was later trained by graphic artist and painter Johan Nordhagen. His first retrospective exhibition outside Norway was shown at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, London in 2019. Born in what is now modern day Oslo in 1869 into a family of eight children he did not finish school and at sixteen left to train as a decorative painter.

For three years from 1902 Sohlberg lived in Røros, a small mining town, with his wife and was inspired by the colourful townscape there. Flower Meadow was painted there. In one image Sohlberg takes us from intense detailed focus on the petals of tiny flowers to the vast horizon of the wider landscape. This skilful composition creates a compelling atmosphere and we are drawn into the work as if walking into and through it. People rarely if ever featured in his paintings. Comparisons with the more psychologically – focused work of fellow Norwegian Edvard Munch were frequently repudiated by Sohlberg. It is probably fair to say that his works have little of the sometimes despairing undercurrents of Munch. They offer a timeless, still relevant beauty which is soothing to the modern soul.
