“Five-storied Pagoda at Nikkô”. c.1930.
This stunning Duille fine art print features ‘Five-storied Pagoda at Nikkô’ a woodblock by Japanese artist Tsuchiya Kôitsu.
About the work
The pagoda at Nikkô is one of the most famous in all Japan. Built originally in 1650 and rebuilt in 1818 it marks the entrance to the Tōshōgū Shrine, a much visited destination and now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Tsuchiya Kôitsu’s beautiful woodblock shows the pagoda framed by the snow-filled midwinter sky and snow-covered Cedar Avenue of Nikkō. Stillness and serene winter beauty create a compelling atmosphere of contemplation.
