About the work
The Eiffel Tower was constructed between 1887 and 1889 when Parisian Henri Rivière was in his early twenties. Fascinated with the tower he visited, photographed and drew it. The resulting series of lithographs all feature its image seen in a wide variety of contexts illustrating the ever-present new landmark which was to become a world icon of the city and France. Feuilles d’automne features a cropped view of autumn leaves seen against the Parisian sky with The Eiffel Tower ascending through the clouds. Used as the frontispiece of the entire print series Feuilles d’automne entices the viewer into the scene and the numerous views of the city to come. Feuilles d’automne and its companion prints are rendered in a Japonist style. This influence from the east was taken up by Vincent van Gogh, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Gustav Klimt and Claude Monet among many. Elements of traditional Japanese woodblock design can be seen clearly in Rivière’s composition and the way in which the prints have been finished. For lovers of Paris, this beautiful scene is a wistful reminder of its magic.
A companion work from the series is also available and both prints will complement one another on display.
