About the artist.
Watanabe Shōtei ( also known as Watanabe Seitei ) was a Nihonga painter and one of the first to visit Europe. He attended the 1878 International Exhibition in Paris and was awarded a medal. He travelled in the United States – unusual for a Japanese artist at this time. Shōtei’s style blended Western realism with traditional Japanese techniques and subjects. His work remains influential to the present day and is represented in European and American museum collections.
