About the work
Henri Rivière was born and worked in Paris becoming a leader in the revival of traditional printmaking there in the late nineteenth century. Du haut des tours de Notre-Dame was made when he was in his early twenties. It features a birds eye view of the city seen from the tower of the cathedral of Notre-Dame in the midst of winter. The elevated viewpoint, sweeping panorama and play of light across the snowy city makes for a stunning composition in which our imagination can take flight. Du haut des tours de Notre-Dame is rendered in a Japonist style. This influence from the east was taken up by Vincent van Gogh, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Gustav Klimt and Claude Monet among many. Elements of traditional Japanese woodblock design can be seen clearly in Rivière’s composition and the way in which the print has been finished. For lovers of Paris, this breathtaking scene is a fantastic reminder of its magic.
