“Drizzle at Koke-dera Temple”

This breathtaking Duille fine art print features Drizzle at Koke-dera Temple – a woodblock by Japanese artist Shiro Kasamatsu.
This is a museum-quality archival print made using materials which will last for many years.

About the work

Kasamatsu began creating woodblock prints around 1919 and during his long life made around only 150 such works with 50 or so of the early woodblocks being lost to fire following the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. Most popular in the west were his landscapes of which Drizzle at Koke-dera Temple is a particularly beautiful example.

Koke-dera or ‘The Moss Temple’ is known formally as ‘Kōinzan Saihō-ji’. Located in Kyoto it is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has existed for around 1300 years. The temple features an extensive lush moss garden of great beauty and serenity that began to take shape in the mid nineteenth century. In the centre of the garden is the Golden Pond containing three small islands. Kasamatsu’s print is a glimpse of the garden looking out into the pond as rain falls gently. Rippled forms of moss and rain on pond contrast with strong verticals of twisted tree trunks. One of these divides the scene in two framing the view. This highly graphic work renders a scene of great contemplation and offers a restful respite from our busy world. It is said that the garden was a favourite place for Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, who visited many times and took great inspiration from its simplicity and serenity. Drizzle at Koke-dera Temple has much still to teach us; it will make a beautiful addition to your home or an especially thoughtful gift.
