“Crab – Apple” Mackintosh Print

About the work
This charming pencil and watercolour drawing by Charles Rennie Mackintosh was made in 1910 at Chiddingstone, Kent whilst Mackintosh and his wife Margaret were visiting. It is one of a series of works made around the same time ( Japonica is another ). Mackintosh made many botanical drawings in this format. They were usually inscribed with his initials and also with the initials of those who were with him. In this case the cartouche reads “CRM and MMM” ( Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh ). Crab – Apple records the glorious pink – flushed blossom from two sections of the tree and includes fine details of the flowers in various stages of development from bud to maturity. Throughout his entire life the study and representation of flowers was to be a driving passion and a defining foundation of the artist’s visual language.
