About the work
This exquisite late work of Kobayashi Kiyochika depicts a glorious canopy of cherry blossom softly illuminated by the lights of a traditional night stall. Shadowy figures of people strolling underneath the beautiful blossom make an animated scene full of charm and delight. Kiyochika’s traditional woodblock utilises a technique adapted from western art which became known in Japan as kōsen-ga ( light and shade ). This is a vivid, beautifully coloured print that can be enjoyed for years to come.
About the artist.
Kobayashi Kiyochika was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist who became known for woodblock prints and newspaper illustrations. As both a printer and a painter Kiyochika documented the modernisation of Japan featuring industrial subjects such as trains, red-brick buildings, military scenes as well as caricatures and cartoons. He died, aged 65 in the year that Cherry Blossom at Night was first published. Ukiyo-e strongly influenced western understanding of Japanese art in the late 19th century. ‘Japonisme’ is seen in the works of numerous artists from this period including Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh and Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
