This stunning Duille fine art print features “Cactus” made in pencil and watercolour by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1915 at Walberswick. Available framed or unframed.
This stunning Duille fine art print features a flowering cactus ( thought to be Schlumbergera × buckleyi – sometimes known as The Christmas Cactus ) drawn in pencil and watercolour by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1915 at Walberswick. It is a striking and beautiful botanical work; richly coloured and dynamic in form. Here the work is reproduced at actual size in high resolution. This is a museum-quality archival print made using materials which will last for many years and bring beauty to your home.
About the work
Mackintosh was living with his wife Margaret in the early part of the Great War period on the east coast of England from July 1914. Cactus was painted at Walberswick in 1915, possibly late in that year when the plant is in flower. Schlumbergera × buckleyi is a popular seasonal houseplant. Its origins are in Brazil and it was first developed as a deliberate cross breed in England around 1850. Mackintosh has rendered the plant in glorious colour in a striking graphic composition. A single flower is painted in top view at the bottom of the piece to record its form. Cactus is one of a series of related drawings featuring wild and cultivated flowers made around the same period which were intended for publication in a book.
