About the work
Franz Marc painted Blue Fox in the studio of his friend and fellow Expressionist August Macke in Bonn. One of multiple works featuring animals made in 1911 Blue Fox is a tender study showing the fox at rest under a tree. The image is framed as a photograph snapshot but the colours, bright, vivid with strongly contrasting complementary combinations elevate the work. For Marc the colours were symbolic and each had a meaning.

In a letter to August Macke in December 1910 he wrote:
“Blue is the male principle, stern, and spiritual. Yellow the female principle, gentle, cheerful, and sensual. Red is matter, brutal and heavy and always the color which must be fought and vanquished by the other two! [ . . . ] The green must always be helped again by blue (the sky) and yellow (the sun) in order to silence the material world.”

Marc’s animal paintings have strong emotional power and remind us of our connection to the natural word and all that we can learn from it.
Sadly Franz Marc was lost aged only 36 killed at the Battle of Verdun in 1916. Along with his friends in the Expressionist movement he helped to change the way we see what is around us.
