The beautiful Blackthorn Chiddingstone was made in Chiddingstone, Kent in 1910. This is a museum-quality archival print made using materials which will last for many years. A stunning work by Mackintosh to bring beauty to your home.

About the work
Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife Margaret visited Chiddingstone, Kent in 1910. Mackintosh made a series of works here ( including also Crab – Apple and Japonica ). These botanical drawings all have a similar format and are usually inscribed with the artist’s initials and also with those of who were with him. In this case the cartouche reads “CRM and MMM” ( Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh ). This Blackthorn is one of two detailed studies made by the artist of the dramatic flowers and stems of Prunus spinosa ( a European native also known as ‘Sloe’ and used for flavouring gin ). We also offer a print of the other drawing. The artist rarely made repeat drawings of botanical subjects so this must have held particular interest for him. The Blackthorn has dense clouds of snow-white flowers in spring. Like Japonica the style of this drawing shows the influence of Japanese aesthetics on Mackintosh’s work. A delicate structural sensibility that echoes works by Japanese woodblock masters and an approach played out in numerous other designs during his career.
Interestingly Mackintosh has ‘broken’ the stem of the plant in the centre of the drawing to create an ovoid area which is left unfilled. His intentions are not clear but it may have been planned to include a closeup detail drawing here. As with many Mackintosh works there is an element of mystery which adds to their fascination.
