“Begonias” Mackintosh Print

A beautiful Duille fine art print featuring “Begonias” made in pencil and watercolour by Charles Rennie Mackintosh around 1917 in Chelsea, London.
Available framed or unframed.

This stylish watercolour from Mackintosh was made in Chelsea, London during the First World War. A stunning arrangement of Begonia flowers in a strikingly architectural vase is displayed dramatically against one of Mackintosh’s textile designs. This is a museum-quality archival print made using materials which will last for many years.

About the work
It’s thought that Begonias was painted around 1917. This mid-war period proved to be financially difficult for the artist and his wife Margaret. Wartime restrictions limited building work and Mackintosh’s only major architectural commission during this period was for 78 Derngate, Northampton. Elements of the decor for that house are seen in Begonias. The painting was bought from Mackintosh in 1919 by William Davidson his longtime friend and patron supplying much-needed funds. Margaret and Charles also turned to producing textile designs which they sold to progressive manufacturers to raise funds and one of these designs ‘Blue Garlands’ features as a backdrop to Begonias. Like much of Mackintosh’s work from this period Begonias is imbued with a glamorous metropolitan style which anticipates Art Deco.

Mackintosh painted a series of these floral themed works for sale including Petunias, Winter Rose, Pinks,Yellow Tulips and Peonies.
