About the artist
Charles Sheeler was born in Philadelphia in 1883. He achieved success as a young man exhibiting as early as 1908. His influences included Giotto, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque as well as Shaker architecture. Sheeler worked as a commercial photographer and later joined New York’s Metropolitan Museum as a senior research fellow in photography. His paintings have been termed ‘precisionist’ and were developed from his photography of industrial landscapes and machinery. They represent a flowering of unabashed American Modernism and his work has influenced generations of artists. It is represented in major American collections including MoMA, The Metropolitan Museum and The National Gallery of Art.

About the work
Ballardvale features an industrial landscape dominated by a tall chimney at its centre. The blocky, angular composition is made of strongly geometric planes of colour and abstracted detail to show a minimalist view of the scene. Buildings are rendered mainly in earth tones that contrast with the blues and greens of the sky. The effects of light and shadow take up the sky colours to integrate the whole as one dynamic and visually exciting work. Painted whilst Sheeler was resident in Andover, Massachusetts the work is a direct development from his photography of  the area. Ballardvale though now almost eighty years old retains a freshness and resonance for our modern day.
