“Anemones” Mackintosh Print

This gorgeous watercolour from Mackintosh was made in Chelsea, London around 1916. This is a museum-quality archival print made using materials which will last for many years.

About the work
Anemones was painted around 1916 and this war time period proved to be financially difficult for the artist and his wife Margaret. The couple turned to producing textile designs which they sold to progressive manufacturers to raise funds.

Mackintosh also painted several floral themed works for sale ( Winter Rose, Peonies, Yellow Tulips, Pinks and Petunias were others ). Like several works in this series Mackintosh has used patterns from his textile designs in the background of Anemones. A design known as ‘Sweet Peas’ is shown in a framed artwork behind the vase of flowers. This artwork also features the vase of anemones as if to echo the foreground scene. The red spines of the books draw us into this lively and complex still life which contrasts the vivacious abundance of the flowers with the strict geometry of the man-made elements. Centre stage is a blue and white striped vase; a pattern which formed the basis of Mackintosh’s 1916 wall treatment at 78 Derngate and was also used many years previously in his own home in Glasgow.

Anemones is an exciting, joyful painting redolent of summer glories. Mackintosh at the height of his powers as a watercolourist has made a rich and beautiful work.
